Born on 20 September 1886 at Ogan, Argyle, enlisted in 1908, he served in India and Egypt. He was a well-known athlete, winning the championship of Egypt ans the Soudan for long-dstance running in 1913. Arrived in October 1914 in France, he fought on the Aisne, during the First Battle of Ypres, at Neuve-Chapelle, at Festubert where he was shot through the leg. He was killed at Hulluch during the Battle of Loos, on 25 September 1915.
